De Soto Children's Pee Wee Fishing Tournament

Manatee - Over 40 children participated in the 2nd annual De Soto fishing tournament Saturday morning from 9 am to 11 a.m. Children ages 5-11 were trying to catch the biggest fish along the Manatee River next to the Tarpon Pointe restaurant who sponsored today's event.

The kids were given big red cane pole, squid for bait and had 2 hours to catch the biggest fish. The fishing was a bit slow, but, that's the way fishing goes sometimes. More importantly the kids were outside enjoying nature, and spending time with their parents and it was more about catching memories than marine life.

The largest fish caught was over 10 inches, and others caught smaller fish. Some kids caught a few crabs which brought smiles to their faces just the same.

This morning’s Pee Wee tournament is all part of the 17th annual De Soto Fishing tournament which started on Friday and goes through Sunday afternoon. The weigh in for this popular tournament is Sunday starting at 11 a.m. for the Juniors and wrapping up at 2 p.m. for the offshore division at Tarpon Pointe Marina.
