CHARLOTTE COUNTY, FL-The Florida Department of Law Enforcement released the crime statistics for the first half of 2013 and the Sheriff’s Office showed a 6.2% decrease in index crimes reported.

Index crimes are categorized as murders, forcible rapes, robberies, aggravated assaults, burglaries and larcenies.  When comparing the number of those type crimes reported between January and June of 2013 with the same time period last year, the Sheriff’s Office received a total of 115 fewer complaints.  The areas that showed a significant decrease were the number of burglaries and larcenies reported.

Sheriff Bill Prummell credited the effectiveness of the agency’s intelligence-led policing concept with the reduction of property-related crimes.

“By using intelligence-led policing, we are better able to predict and target potential criminal activity,” Sheriff Prummell said.  “That helps with preventing crime as well as with solving crimes.”

The Sheriff’s Office’s clearance rate went from 34.2% in the first half of 2013 to 38.0% for the first half of 2013.

“That means that, of the crimes that are being reported, we are able to successfully resolve more of them,” said Sheriff Prummell.

Statewide, FDLE reported a 5.2% decrease in the number of index crimes reported, with a clearance rate of 24.7%.  The semi-annual crime reports are available on FDLE’s website at http://www.fdle.state.fl.us/Content/FSAC/UCR/UCR-Home.aspx" href="http://www.fdle.state.fl.us/Content/FSAC/UCR/UCR-Home.aspx">http://www.fdle.state.fl.us/Content/FSAC/UCR/UCR-Home.aspx.
