Crew prepares for Nik Wallenda practice walk

MANATEE COUNTY - Nik Wallenda is wrapping up the press tour for his Grand Canyon walk, and preparing to start practicing.

Crews have been out at Benderson Park in Manatee County the last couple of days putting up the wire that he will practice on here before his big walk.

We talked to Nik's assistant as they were putting the final touches on the 1200 foot wire that he will practice on, and he says Nik is anxious to get out there.

Nik will practice at the park twice a day for the next week and half preparing for the Grand Canyon walk on June 23.

His first walk is Thursday, and despite the inclement weather forecast, his assistant says a little rain and wind won't stop him. He says it's actually advantageous, because it gives Nik the opportunity to see how the wire feels under those conditions.

The wire at Benderson is about 1200 feet long, while the wire in the Grand Canyon will be about 1500 feet.

Nik will need to make sure he is prepared for a walk of that length. “A lot of it is mindset and when he prepares for these it is about the mindset and he respects what he does, absolutely, but it's something that he's been training for since he was 2,” says Executive Assistant Joseph Mascitto.

You are encouraged to go out and watch Nik practice. He will be doing two shows a day, Tuesday through Saturday, beginning tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. There will be one show on Sunday at 3 p.m., and on Monday he is scheduled to leave.

Nik's Grand Canyon walk will be aired on the Discovery Channel. ABC 7 will be closely following Nik's journey. We will have the latest on the preparations leading up to his Grand Canyon walk on June 23rd.
