SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. - The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office is launching a new initiative to more publicly notify citizens of sex offenders and predators who register a local address for the first time.

When a sex offender or predator is released from jail or prison, or moves to a new address, they must register with the Sarasota County Jail. When an offender registers in Sarasota County for the first time, the sheriff’s office will issue a press release, publish it on its website and post a notification to the agency Facebook page, which will include the person’s mug shot in a distinctive graphic.

“We want citizens to know when someone who has been labeled a sex offender or predator moves into this county and where they plan to live,” said Sheriff Tom Knight.

In addition to providing residential information, the release will state when the crime occurred, provide context about the case, the sentence they received, explain whether they have been declared a sex offender or predator and what restrictions they have.

An example of the press release can be seen here.

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office still recommends that citizens sign up for sex offender alerts from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
