Sarasota County staff, working with the Sarasota County Sheriff's Work Offender program, is scheduled to begin clean up operations to remove dead fish on Blind Pass Beach, 6725 Manasota Key Road, Manasota Key on Thursday and Friday. The dead fish are suspected to be the result of a red tide bloom located off shore in the Gulf of Mexico.

County staff will continue to monitor all public beaches for impacts of red tide and will respond as the need arises. County crews clean public beaches and do not clean private beach property. Over the weekend, Sarasota County lifeguards reported odor and other possible signs of red tide at some public beaches in southern Sarasota County. Within the last 24 hours dead fish began washing up on Blind Pass Beach.

Working in partnership with Visit Sarasota County, the county is providing updates to local hotels and resorts. "We realize that reports of red tide are an inconvenience for hotels, resorts, visitors, residents and beachfront property owners," said George Tatge, manager, Sarasota County Parks and Recreation. "The good news is we have 35-miles of beaches in Sarasota County and at this time the impacts seem to be isolated to only a small portion of that."

Visitors and residents can get the latest beach conditions by visiting http://coolgate.mote.org/beachconditions or calling 941-BEACHES (941-232-2437). The phone hotline is updated twice a day.
