Cooking up changes at USF Sarasota Manatee

SARASOTA, Fla. - Culinary students will officially have a new facility to create and fine tune their cooking skills this week.

USF Sarasota-Manatee will open a new culinary school on Main Street in Lakewood Ranch with a ribbon cutting ceremony occurring Wednesday, February 5, 2014 from 4:30‐6:30 p.m.

The USFSM Culinary Lab benefits from taking over a turn-key, hands-on venue that is already set up for learning and cooking demonstrations. Only minor construction was necessary for soundproofing purposes and to brand the facility to USFSM before classes began in January.

The University expanded to Lakewood Ranch because of a lack of room on the Sarasota Manatee campus. More than 50 students are already enrolled in the program.

Hospitality students taking classes at the facility will be exposed to a real Food & Beverage environment with a business and industry leadership emphasis.

Classes include:

* food production strategies

* recipe execution

* menu development

* flavor profiling

* wine tasting

* event planning

* sanitation strategies

* the restaurant purchasing cycle

* staff and employee management, etc.
