BRADENTON, Fla. - One of the most respected and successful football coaches on the Suncoast spent his last day on campus Friday.
Southeast High School's Paul Maechtle is officially retired.
Maechtle spent 40 years at Southeast, the last three-plus decades as Athletic Director and head football coach. He led the Seminoles to a pair of state championships during the early 90's.
He has fond memories of those days.
Legendary coach reflects on 40 years of high school football
Coach Paul Maechtle reflects on his career with ABC 7 after 40 at Southeast High School.
"One of the reasons I stayed is I found that Manatee County got to be a real hot bed for football in the Manatee, Sarasota area. We had things really growing and rolling in the 80's and into the early 90's, and it’s still going on today. And that made it fun and enjoyable, and made it seem like you were coaching at a level that was probably a little bit higher than high school.”
Maechtle says he became emotional Friday morning after the first bell had rung. He says he plans to play some golf on Monday.
