Charlotte County Sheriff's Corporal shot and killed

PORT CHARLOTTE-- The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office is on the scene of a fatal shooting incident that occurred earlier this evening at the Lakes of Tuscana Apartments on Veterans Blvd. in Port Charlotte

Corporal Michael Wilson, a 20 year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office, was responding to a domestic disturbance and was shot.  The scene is secured at this time.

Shortly after midnight, with assistance from the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team, entry was made into the apartment of the suspect in the shooting of a deputy.  The person believed to be the suspect was found deceased inside.

The investigation into the shooting continued throughout the night.

Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Pummell will hold a press conference later this morning. We'll have more updates as information becomes available.

    My heartfelt sympathies go out to all of the men and women of the CCSO, Corporal Michael Wilson's friends and beloved family. I am saddened by the loss you are burdened with. May you find peace and comfort in each other during this difficult time.

    I am so sorry to the family, for their loss. I lost a cousin on the job, at a Domestic, Broward County, 1983. I, myself, was lucky to get in and out of law enforcement intact. My most sincere condolences. There is a special place for cops up in heaven. I am crying now, but you did your job.. Much Respect, My Brother. <3
