LAKEWOOD RANCH-- The highly anticipated film, Captain Phillips, is due in theaters October 11th. Tom Hanks stars in the leading role as Richard Phillips, the Captain of the Maersk Alabama. In April 2009, the container ship was hijacked by armed Somali pirates.

Also on board that ship was Ken Quinn, a Lakewood Ranch resident who served as the vessel's 2nd mate. Actor Corey Johnson is playing the role of Quinn in the film.

"It's weird. Not something that happens everyday," said Quinn.

Quinn was invited to the New York premier this Friday. He will meet Johnson for the first time.

"We emailed everyday when they were filming in Malta. The company gave them a ship to film on," said Quinn.

A number of other Maersk Alabama crew members from that April 2009 voyage will be attending the premier as well. Quinn is planning on departing on another adventure on the high seas in October. He says since the event involving the pirates, it has still not bothered him to go to work.

"There has always been a danger going to sea. I could tell you stories. I've been sailing a long time. I've seen all kinds of stuff," he said.

I thought it was disclosed that Phillips encouraged the hi-jack once they were on board....
