SARASOTA, Fla. - One of the first female firefighters on the Suncoast is celebrating a retirement.

Captain Susan Pearson has served with the Sarasota County Fire Department for 25 years, most recently as the Public Information Officer for the department.

Pearson hopes she's helped pave the way for current female firefighters. “The hardest thing to overcome was being one of the first female firefighters on the department, because women were not welcomed with open arms. So I took a long time to prove myself. I just kept my nose to the grindstone and eventually earned the respect of my co-workers. And here I am, Captain, 25 years later.”

While she's looking forward to retirement, Pearson says she'll miss her firefighter family, who at times she spent more time with than her actual family.

We wish her the best.
