I would bet there is more to this story... I am a mother of a 13 year old son, myself, who has been in this school district for several years.. When I approached my son's school regarding the child who had tried to strangle my son inside the classroom, and in front of the teacher as well, they simply removed my son from the class and school went on as "usual".. until the bullies were in other classes.. then in lunch.. then everywhere my son was having to go in school... If there were more education on how to REALLY handle bully situations as far as educating the adults, teacher and PARENTS, alike.. I think this would be less of an issue..In this case, I don't know any of the people personally, at all.. But I could just bet that this kid who was then "abused" by the teacher, allegedly, had had an issue with pestering or bullying other kids at some point... When push comes to shove and there's nothing that we, as adults, feel that we can do, to protect our children's safety.. what would you do??? Restrain a person who may be threatening to cause harm to another?? Rid the person who is threatening someone else's safety?? What extreme is TOO MUCH?? Was there any more information regarding this teacher/his background.. whether or not he, himself has any unresolved anger issues, or 'short fuse' markings in his past:??? What about the student who was allegedly abused..?? Had that student ever been involved in any other 'scuffles' with other children in the school.. or in other schools throughout his past?? My son, like I said, is this age, and he is quite large.. Larger than I now.. and I'm a long lady :) at 5'11 1/2 myself.. I'm in no way condoning ANY use of force on either party.. however, this definitely needs to be investigated moreso to find the actual truth of this horrible allegation/charge.. As if this teacher was/is charged with this crime, it will not only ruin his career, but also speak volumes to any bully in the school system, that it's okay to be a bully, because no adults can touch you... It's out of hand in all ways, and something needs to be done about the actions/consequences of bullies and of the rules about bullying.. Just my opinion, but if you can't send your child to school and feel that they will be safe under the supervision of an adult (teacher) because of a bullying issue, or worse yet, because the adults are abusing our children.. then how can parents send their children to school without having a fear stir inside of them all day long? How can a child feel they have a right to an education if there' s no one there at school that they KNOW they can count on if they need help??? So much is not talked about with kids and being bullied.. due to lack of support basically.. Until major changes are implemented in the schools, I highly recommend each parent make a "bully plan" and implement it with their child at home.. Bad behavior always has received a negative consequence.. It's quite simple.. Kick out the bad seeds.. maybe just a 3 day at first.. for any threats.. any actions of violence.. and three strikes your out..Yet Florida is a no child left behind state, so I doubt this would be practical to that... "law". Back to basics is where I'd say to start.. Educate your children at home about what the best choices would be if such things occur in their daily lives at school, or anywhere.. It all starts with you..... us.. parents.. Let's be the change... talk to your child... and make them, talk back to you (but not in a negative light, as far as that phrase is worded).. What else is there TO do at this point..?? no need for violence, no need for segregation.. start with instilling the common morals and respect in our children at home.. before we send them to school..?? and if you're schedule doesn't permit the time for you to do such... then maybe you should either get a different job, or use some of that money you're working so hard to earn, for a therapist to talk to your child in their early developmental stages for you..?? Again.. all my opinion.. I'll look for further information on this case to be presented.. as the case unveils the whole truth of what caused this teacher to 'snap' and throw this child out of the classroom.. literally..
Let's also mention that Horizons is a school for kids with behavioral problems. The teachers who work at this school are constantly being attacked spit on, verbally abused by the students. I know Mr. Caldwell and he is a great teacher.
