Bradenton man shoots caregiver checking up on him

BRADENTON, FL. - A caregiver is recovering in a local hospital after being shot by the person he was checking up on.

According to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, on Wednesday around 11:30 p.m., deputies responded to a shooting at an apartment on the 4500 block of 9th St. West. When deputies arrived, they learned that 39-year-old Erik Kirby had been shot by 48-year-old Charles Fletcher.

Fletcher, who lives at the residence, told deputies he had just gone to sleep, when he heard a noise and saw someone enter his bedroom. Fletcher grabbed his gun, which he keeps next to his bed, and fired at the person who turned out to be Kirby. Kirby was shot in his midsection and transported to the hospital where he is listed in stable condition.

Fletcher has a medical condition and has several caretakers come to his residence to check up on him. According to Fletcher, Kirby is one of the caretakers.

The investigation continues. No charges have been filed at this time.
