Boat the source of fuel spill on Bird Key

SARASOTA - A boat leaking fuel brought Hazmat crews to a Bird Key neighborhood Thursday night.

It happened in the 500 block of Spoonbill Drive in Sarasota. Firefighters tell ABC 7 that gasoline was leaking from a sport fishing vessel right over a canal.

Fortunately, the boat was on a lift and not in the water, but officials estimate as much as a hundred gallons may have spilled before they plugged the leak.

Firefighters placed booms in the water to contain the spill, and more crews will be back later to skim the fuel off the water.
