SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. - An invasion of small flying insects had beachgoers heading for their cars Monday as Siesta Key public beach.
The unknown insects, which witnesses described as small flying ants, were landing on people and biting them, leaving behind welts on the skin.
The popular beach was largely empty by 3:30pm, which is rare on a warm day in the middle of the tourist season.
Comments on our Facebook page indicate that there were similar swarms in Lakewood Ranch and Twin Lakes Park recently.
ABC 7's Todd Dunn is looking further into this story and will have more this evening on ABC 7 News.
