SARASOTA, Fla. -- It's been years in the making, and Nathan Benderson Park is now officially open.  Sarasota County officials cut the ribbon Saturday on the completion of two of the three phases of development at the park. The first two phases included dredging the lake, then the development of the park itself.

Since the county approved of the plan in 2011, work has been ongoing to add bridges, a paved recreational path, benches, and viewing areas looking out at the water.

With the official opening, officials are stressing that Nathan Benderson Park isn't just a top notch rowing facility.

The next phase in the park's development is getting it ready to host the 2017 World Rowing Championships. The Suncoast Aquatic Nature Center Associates is responsible and will lead on that front.
