SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. - The attorney for the North Port Police officer who is accused of a sex crime, is speaking out, saying that the charges against his client will not hold up.

Melanie Turner was arrested last week and released on bond after she and another officer were accused of sexual battery and false imprisonment. Those charges stem from a March 2nd party where Turner and Officer Ricky Urbina allegedly handcuffed a woman and sexually assaulted her.

The lawyer speaking on behalf of Officer Turner's defense council said those charges are simply not true.

“Going forward, we hope the charges won’t be filed. But if they are, we will prove that this encounter was completely consensual,” says attorney Eric Reisinger.

In an ABC 7 exclusive on Tuesday, a former law enforcement officer from the Suncoast said that while he wasn't at the party the night of the alleged assault, he has been to several other parties where such questionable behavior occurred. He also claims that Officer Turner herself has a bit of a reputation.

“It's my understanding that she was off duty, she was always off duty, and she wasn't committing crimes, put it that way,” says Reisinger.

ABC 7 has reached out to the North Port Police Department for details of any disciplinary action taken against officers improperly behaving. For now, they've provided no comment.
