SARASOTA, Fla. - Eugene Ross of Sarasota High School has not only transformed his game, but he has transformed his body as well.

In this his senior season at Sarasota High School, Ross has really come into his own of late.

"I mean his skills got a lot better, he's stronger, more physical and he plays with a sense of calm," says Sailors head coach Steve Cavallaro.

For the season, Ross is averaging 9 points a game to go with 7 rebounds, and 2 assists. On the surface those are not bad, but he has really stepped up his game in the past 3 weeks as district playoffs approach. “Over the break, we, as a team, made a resolution, like a lot of people do at the new year; and mine was to be a better leader, and to help my teammates," says Ross.

Amazing for a big man at 6'5'', Ross is dropping an amazing 67% of his 3 point attempts. "A lot of time in the gym really improving his game. He is shooting in the 60's percent-wise. For a big man that is off the charts, unheard of," says Cavallaro.

"As I come out and get more comfortable with the 3-point line, it makes it easier for my teammates when it opens up the floor," says Ross.

The transformation of his game has coincided with his reshaping of his body. He has streamlined through determination, and hours in the gym and on the practice court. "Even on the weekend, me and my dad would go to the courts at The Y and practice shooting, practice free throws, and work on my game."

“It’s good to see, because it is a good example for other kids that if you put in the time, work on your game, you can really reap the rewards of it," says Cavallaro.

Congratulations to Eugene Ross of Sarasota High School. He is our ABC 7 Athlete of the Week.
