BRADENTON, Fla. – For this week’s Athlete of the Week, we take a closer look at a Southeast High School basketball player that embodies everything that Scott Dennis believed in when he originated the ABC 7 Athlete of the Week so many years ago.

To hear long-time head coach John Harder tell it, Janelle Gould of Southeast High is one of a kind, and someone whom the rest of us should model ourselves after. "She's right up there with the best of the best. She is an excellent point guard when it comes to passing, knowing when to shoot, getting back on defense. She brings it to the table. She has calmness, ability, and patience and skills. She is the whole package. This girl deserves this award and much more from the community when you talk about the type of child we want to raise."

On and off the court, this young lady goes about life the right way. She has a 3.8 GPA and is especially good in American history and senior government.

On the court, she has many facets. "It’s hard work; it really is…I have been on the honor roll ever since kindergarten. I would love to go to college. I would love to get an academic scholarship, and if I can play basketball, that would be great. I know that my grades come first," says Gould.

For the coach, he has to walk a fine line. He thinks so highly of her, he worries that others may tire of living up to the standard she has set for the ‘Noles. "Whenever they are having a tough day, I ask them to model themselves after Janelle Gould. I have to be a little bit careful of that, that I don't overdo it."

Congratulations to Janelle Gould of Southeast High School. She is our ABC 7 Athlete of the Week.
