SARASOTA, Fla. -- The Sarasota Christian Blazers advanced to the regional semifinals in the high school softball playoffs Wednesday night. If they want to get to the state title game, they will need their catalyst: McKenzie Lantz.
The Blazers are headed for a rematch with Southwest Florida Christian, a team they beat to win the district. The Blazers are a young team led by sophomore star shortstop Lantz.
"She's our shortstop, our leadoff hitter. Like you said, she is one of our leaders; a quiet leader, but a leader just the same," says head coach Dallas Miller.
Lantz is a 4.6 GPA student, and on the field she is hitting .560 as the leadoff hitter, so she is the engine that makes this offensive machine go. "I couldn't do it without the coaches, obviously. Dallas, Brian and my dad are great coaches. It’s so fun to play on the team because we are such good friends," says Lantz.
She is the shortstop because that's basically where the coach told her she should play. She does what's best for the team. In fact she does what's best for all of her teams.
She stays busy. "McKenzie is such a good all-around athlete. At this school she has played volleyball, been a star on the basketball team, and obviously a star on here on the softball field," says Miller.
“I think just because I am in the routine of practices and games. When basketball ends, I am excited to start softball. It’s just fun to go from one to the next."
Congratulations to McKenzie Lantz of Sarasota Christian. She is our ABC 7 Athlete of the Week.
