2 arrested in North Port marijuana grow house bust

NORTH PORT - North Port Police arrested two men Thursday in a large marijuana grow house bust.

Authorities found the plants following a search warrant at Tropicaire Boulevard and Taneytown Street.

At approximately 9 a.m., members from the North Port Police Department Special Investigations Unit (SIU), with assistance from the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office SWAT Team and AIR 1, executed a search warrant on the suspected marijuana grow operation.

Authorities discovered roughly 125 full grown marijuana plants, as well as equipment that is typically employed to conduct an illegal grow of this magnitude.

The street value is estimated at $125,000.

The suspects, 35-year-old Maykel Benitez-Abella and 32-year-old Lumey Echevarria-Hernandez were arrested and charged with Sell, Manufacture, Possession with Intent to Sell a Controlled Substance, Trafficking in Cannabis, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Keeping a Structure for Use of/selling of a Controlled Substance.
