PUNTA GORDA, FL. - An arrest has been made in the homicide of a 75-year-old Tropical Gulf Acres man that occurred Nov. 17, 2012.

Charged with Second Degree Murder was 35-year-old Michael Christopher Sheeley of Punta Gorda.

Sheeley has been in the Charlotte County Jail since Nov. 18 when he was arrested for Grand Theft, Dealing in Stolen Property, Fraudulent Use of Credit Cards, and False Verification of Ownership, all related to the homicide case.

On Nov. 17 at approximately 8:30 p.m., the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office responded to a medical call reporting that the victim, 75-year-old Duane C. Fenner, was found breathing, but unresponsive by his daughter in his home at 12517 Gucci Drive.

Fenner was transported to Charlotte Regional Medical Center by EMS. The victim’s daughter told detectives that his car and some jewelry were missing from the home, which triggered an immediate investigation by the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office.

The investigation suggested the victim had been subjected to some form of violence that resulted in his incapacitated state. On Nov. 24 the victim died at the hospital. Through post-mortem examination it was substantiated that the victim sustained trauma to his throat area resulting in his death.

Sheeley was linked to the charges by physical and documentary evidence, and statements made in the course of interviews by MCU detectives. Today, after an extensive investigation by detectives, and the Office of the State Attorney, Sheeley was formally charged with Second Degree Murder. He is being held at the Charlotte County Jail on no bond, pending further court action. This is Sheeley’s 10th booking; he is a convicted felon.
