DEEP CREEK, FL. - Charlotte County Sheriff's Major Crimes Unit detectives arrested a Punta Gorda man in connection with an armed home invasion Monday evening in Deep Creek.
Arrested was 24-year-oild Branden Alex Shaffer. He was charged with Home Invasion Robbery with a Firearm, and Aggravated Assault with a Firearm. Shaffer remains in the Charlotte County Jail on no bond.
The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office received a call at 7:41 p.m. to the 26000 block of Sandhill Boulevard. The couple reported they were in their bedroom. She heard a noise, got up, and when she came out of the bedroom, a man wearing a mask pointed a rifle at her face. The man said, “Give me everything you got or I will shoot you.” The woman recognized the man as Shaffer who was wearing the same clothing when he came to their home at 9:15 a.m. Monday. She said Shaffer was asking for $40; he was very upset that they would not give him the money and left.
Her husband heard his wife’s screams, came out and saw Shaffer run out the sliding doors and climb over a wall. Both said they were in fear of their lives. When Shaffer ran down the street, the couple’s son was next door and gave chase. The boy hit Shaffer in the back with a closed fist as he got into his work vehicle, a white Comcast Xfinity truck and drove off.
Detectives responded to Shaffer’s home on Sailfish Court and spoke with his father who said his son obtained his brothers rifle saying he was going hog hunting. Shaffer was taken into custody for questioning; he said the couple owed him $150 and throughout the day telephone conversations were made and an argument ensued between them. Shaffer said he went to the couple’s home to scare them but he never went inside the house. He said when he got home he put his jacket, rifle and shoes under his bed.
Shaffer was arrested and taken to the Charlotte County Jail.
