DeSOTO COUNTY, Fla. - New details are emerging from the brutal attack in Arcadia last week that left a father dead and a mother seriously injured.
49-year-old Karl Burnham was arrested in Orlando last week after investigators say he attacked his parents with a hammer then fled in their car.
It happened on March 27th in a home on Owens Avenue.
According to a DeSoto County arrest warrant, Karl's mother JoAnn told investigators that she was at home on the computer when her son Karl, who also lived in the house, walked in the room and began beating her with a wooden hammer without explanation. She said the last thing she remembers is her husband George coming to her rescue.
Her daughter Tammy later arrived to find both her parents injured in the living room and George was not breathing. She called for help.
Later that night, Orange County deputies pulled Karl Burnham over on Orange Blossom Trail in Orlando and arrested him. He was driving his parent's car with a wooden hammer visible in the back seat.
According to NBC 2 in Ft. Myers, Karl Burnham was convicted of 2nd degree murder, robbery and grand theft in Orange County in 1988. He was sentenced to 22 years and released in 2012.
Burnham now faces charges of 1st Degree Murder, Attempted Murder, and Grand Theft Auto.
