MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. - Some 30 hours after Monday’s accident in which an interstate overpass was severely damaged, southbound traffic on I-75 has fully reopened.

Workers from Florida Department of Transportation cleared all southbound lanes of the University Parkway overpass at 6pm Tuesday.

University Parkway, which had fully reopened Tuesday morning, was experiencing lane closures during the day Tuesday.  However, all lanes were fully reopened by 5pm.

Department of Transportation crews worked through the night to repair the roadway.

Around noon on Monday, a pile driving cushion fell off a flatbed truck, damaging the road in three spots and causing chunks of concrete to fall onto University.

Florida Highway Patrol reports the truck driver had swerved from the right lane to the center lane in order to avoid a collision. The momentum caused the equipment to fall off.

Initial reports warned that I-75's middle and outside southbound lanes would remain closed at the overpass until Wednesday afternoon, but the Department of Transportation bumped up the opening to 6pm Tuesday.
