SARASOTA - Two days after a meeting between the Sarasota County Sheriff and the Sarasota Chief of Police, deputies teamed up with city police officers and hit the water for a joint water rescue training session.

The training was held at Nathan Benderson Park Friday afternoon. The aviation and sheriffs underwater recovery force - or SURF - went through a joint training drill to extract victims from the water. They were joined by dive teams from the Sarasota Police Department.

“This community, we are in a water-based area, and we have two airports near the gulf. It’s imperative that we have a good water rescue team and we are used all the time,” says Sgt. Scott Osborne with the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.

They say this type of training is performed at least once every two years to ensure that their personnel are ready for an emergency.

They'll also be ready to go for next week's offshore boat race.
