BRADENTON, Fla. -- Despite last year’s sequestration, when national parks had to close down for a period of time, Manatee County's DeSoto National Memorial had a big year in 2013.

According to a National Park Service report, nearly 300,000 thousand people visited the memorial.

Those visitors spent more than $15 million in communities near the park, which is located on the Manatee River in West Bradenton. According to the report, most visitors spending was for lodging and food.

Last year, DeSoto National Memorial had to close down while the federal government shut down over the budget.
