What's the buzz?

If you have been bitten by the bug, you may notice that they are out there in record numbers.

Mosquitoes are taking a bite out of even the most resistant, which leave the youngest and most vulnerable at greater risk for mosquito borne diseases.

There are precautions you can take to reduce the risk of coming in contact with the nasty little buzzers, such as emptying outdoor pet water bowls, not overfilling your planters and draining your independent gutter attachments.  Basically, making sure that you don't have unnecessary standing water.

But, what can you do to protect yourself when out and about.

First rule is try not to go out at dusk, which is when the mosquito's are most abundant.

Next, wear long sleeved shirts and cover your legs.

And last, use a repellant.

More on how to protect yourself this mosquito season:

  • Use insect repellant containing DEET 30-35% (except for children, use 6-10%)
  • Wear light-colored clothes that cover most of your body, i.e., arms, legs, ankles.
  • Make sure house screens are intact and closed to prevent mosquitoes from entering house.
  • If outside, avoid wearing perfume, cologne, hair spray, or after-shave lotions; the scent may attract insects.  Use unscented soaps, shampoos, and deodorants.
  • Spray permethrin on clothing and bed nets if camping or hiking.
  • Wear shoes (not sandals) and socks.
  • MOST IMPORTANTLY, stay inside if possible during the hours of dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
