PUNTA GORDA, FL (WWSB) - A multi-vehicle crash and a vehicle fire delayed travelers on southbound Interstate 75 for several hours Tuesday morning in Punta Gorda.
Florida Highway Patrol responded to mile marker 164, just south of the Duncan Road exit, at 7:19 a.m. for reports of a collision involving five vehicles.
The crash sent five people to Fawcett Memorial Hospital for minor injuries and caused a roadblock in the inside lane due to the damaged vehicles.
That's when troopers say a semi-truck, hauling sand caught fire while waiting for the roadway to be cleared. The Fire Department and EMS were called to the scene and the fire was quickly extinguished.
The fire caused significant damage to the roadway that had to be repaired by a paving company causing further delays for drivers on I-75.
The driver of the semi-truck was unharmed by the fire.
