Geriatric psychiatrist offers tips for seniors in the storm

Hurricanes, tornadoes and wind oh my!

The onslaught of severe weather sent many into a panic.

cell phones put out an alert sending cars and pedestrians scrambling for shelter, but for seniors in our community this time of year may be particularly unnerving.

Geriatric psychiatrist, Vladimir Einisman of Serenity Place, at Doctors Hospital of Sarasota says the best way for seniors to lower their stress is to put a plan in place.

"Have enough food, and enough supply in case of an emergency. And make sure to have the phone numbers of people you can call in case of emergency."

He also suggests that you change your thought process by keeping busy. Television, radio and playing with a pet can be a welcome distraction when the wind is blowing.

"For the elderly being prepared is particularly important, and it adds some comfort to know that you want have to be searching for things if you are organized."

He concurs that when fear sets in to remember that we are no more than a phone call away from friends and relatives, and that we are all in the same boat.
