FPL crews standing by for 'mutual assistance' after hurricane hits Panhandle

SARASOTA, FL (WWSB) - 1,350 Florida Power & Light workers, including contractors, are standing by at the Sarasota Fairgrounds on Fruitville Road. They're waiting for the call to head north and provide mutual assistance for victims of Hurricane Michael in North Florida.

"We lend our support to our neighboring utilities as they have done for us in the past--such as Hurricane Irma, and just recently where we went up as part of a mutual assistance program to help our neighbors in the Carolinas," said FPL Spokesman Jose Labrador of North Port.

Some of the crews on stand-by drove from Mississippi to Sarasota, and then will then drive six hours back north to the area where the hurricane is expected to make landfall.

An official from the Sarasota Fairgrounds says they allow the utility crews to stage on their land without charge.
