Sarasota, Fla. -- Highland games and bag pipes were enjoyed by many at the Sarasota Fairgrounds this Saturday. The 20th annual Sarasota Highland Games and Celtic Festival kicked off Friday night with a Celtic Rock concert. They joined back Saturday morning at 9am and continued till 6:30pm Saturday night.
There were fifteen marching pipe bands, Scottish and Irish dancers as well as many games such as axe throwing and Frisbee and sheep herding dog demonstrations. But it wasn't all about the entertainment -- 35 clans from Scotland came to educate visitors about their history. Allan McIlraith said they do this and several other concerts during the year hopefully to engage some more support -- and teach younger people about the heritage of the Scottish and Irish people. McIlraith is also President of the Sarasota Caledonian Club. The Caledonian Clubs mission is to enlighten Suncoast citizens about the impact Scots had during the early founding days of Sarasota.
