SARASOTA, FL (WWSB) - The Evansville, Indiana, Police Chief, and two other staff members are wrapping up a two-day trip to the Suncoast to take notes about the Sarasota Police Department's "Homeless Outreach Team."
The "HOT Team" consists of a few members of the local department who reach out to vagrants on a one-on-one approach.
The point-man for the Evansville homeless efforts says he can see the program working in his community.
"Yeah I definitely think so, there's a lot to build off here. They've got a successful program going and I think we can apply the same principles going on here back in Evansville," Josh Brewer said.
Sarasota's Police Chief says she's pleased the Evansville Police would make the effort to come here to learn more about the initiative.
"We're really honored we'd have a group from Indiana come to take a look at our Homeless Outreach Team. It's satisfying to know it is going to be a practice used by another agency," said Chief Bernadette Dipino.
The Evansville Police Chief says he heard Chief Dipino speak about the "HOT Team" approach while at a national law enforcement conference last year in Philadelphia.
