SARASOTA, Fla. - Many volunteers spent their Saturday making the Suncoast a cleaner place to live. The Sarasota Bay Guardians visited the Bowlees Creek Island to remove debris.

Bowlees Creek is located near the county boundary between Sarasota and Manatee. Precisely, it's on  the  east  side  of  Sarasota  Bay  at  the  mouth  of  Bowlees  Creek  in Manatee County.  It is a small spoil island approximately 3.5 acres in size.  The island is owned by the State of Florida as a sovereign submerged land and is leased for management as a wildlife sanctuary by the Florida Audubon Society  dba  Audubon  of  Florida.

The volunteers took boats, canoes and kayaks to the island which is known for catching debris flowing into Sarasota Bay. The Bay Guardians said each outing includes environmental education and a picnic lunch. Members can join for a single project or as an ongoing commitment.
