SARASOTA, Fla. - Saturday marked the nation's largest organized cleanup beautification project. It was the 2014 Great American Cleanup and many participated locally. Across the nation millions of volunteers joined one another in more than 30,000 community improvement events. These events clean local parks, waterways, trails, sidewalks and streets. Many participated in the effort on the suncoast including the group 'Keep Sarasota County Beautiful'. This organization helped clean many sites throughout Sarasota County including Siesta Key Beach. The beach cleanup Program Coordinator, Wendi Crisp, said “Were expecting about 150 volunteers to help us pick up everything from plastic bottles and straw wrappers to candy wrappers and cigarette butts. It's an effort to make the beaches more beautiful for everyone to enjoy.” A volunteer for Saturday's event, Phil Roberts, said “Hopefully it will be contagious and other folks will go ahead and see what were doing and they will start picking up other peoples trash and hauling their own. It's been amazing how many people say 'Thank You'”. In Sarasota County volunteers cleaned more than 25 parks, beaches and natural areas. The program is built on a foundation of individual responsibility and civic pride.
