The Ohio State Buckeyes keep on winning under head coach Urban Meyer. Here on the Suncoast, the Buckeyes Alumni Club is putting on a race where it will be college-bound kids who keep winning.
Race Director Tom Flanagan explains the reasoning behind the race, "We're not a college town, but this race will be about college affiliation, and the post-race festivities are the tailgating aspect of it."
The Gameday 5K will be held Saturday November 12th, and it is modeled after the Big Ten 10K in Chicago.
"The awards have a gameday theme, and the fans are dressed in school outfits."
So, the Buckeyes have teamed up with the Manasota Track Club, but all schools can benefit.
"We are sharing the wealth. Name your school affiliation, and part of proceeds will go to that school", continues Tom
This makes it sort of difficult to dislike the Buckeyes now, even if your a Meeshigan fan.
"No, it doesn't. Others still have plenty of reason to hate us."
No reasons to dislike the sponsors who have made it possible that all race money goes to the scholarship fund.
"New Balance Sarasota, Gold Coast Eagle, Fleet Feet, and Fit2Run have picked up the cost of the race," explains Tim. "So all money from racers goes to the kids."
Tom's wife, Nancy, is a consultant for the race, and since it is Veterans Day weekend, they made the color schemes not about schools, but about those who have made this country what it is today.
Nancy Flanagan, a consultant for the Manasota Track Club says, "We made the logo red, white, and blue for an All American look and feel to it."
Both Nancy and Tom are Buckeyes through and through, so everyone will have plenty of time to enjoy the games the day of the Gameday 5K.
"You can enjoy the pizza, the beer, and the awards ceremony, and still be home in time to watch the Maryland game," laughs Nancy. "Go Bucks!!"
