PUNTA GORDA, FL (WWSB) - A Punta Gorda homeowner and a Charlotte County Sheriff's Deputy were attacked by three dogs early Thursday morning.
The incident began at 7:15 a.m., when deputies received reports of a man trapped in his truck by three loose and aggressive pit bulls. According to the Sheriff's office, the caller stated that he was unable to open the gate to leave his property or to return to his residence and required assistance.
When deputies arrived, the dogs were seen leaving the complainant's yard and entering the adjacent property. That's when the Sheriff's office says the man exited his truck to talk with deputies.
During the conversation, the dogs re-entered the property and began to charge at the two men. The caller returned to his vehicle and the deputy circled the truck in an attempt to avoid the animals.
According to a press release from the CCSO, one of the dogs committed to charging the deputy, at which time the deputy unholstered and fired his weapon, striking the dog in the jaw.
A second dog moved to attack the deputy and was also shot in an attempt to stop the attack. All three dogs then moved away from the deputy and homeowner.
Other responding officers were able to keep the dogs in sight until Animal Control could arrive.
All three dogs were taken into custody and the two injured canines were transported to a veterinarian for treatment.
The homeowner told deputies that he believed the dogs belong to a neighbor who was out of town.
