The federal government said it had "no accepted medical use."
Fast forward to 2013, and 20 of 50 U.S. states and Washington, D.C. have legalized the plant for medical use.
There are plenty of supporters in Florida who think the Sunshine State should become the 21st state to legalize it, but there are also opponents.
On Thursday in Manatee County, one group will meet in an effort to drum up support against the effort to legalize marijuana.
ABC 7 Reporter Bobeth Yates will speak with them, and those who favor legalization for medical purposes.
