SARASOTA, FL (WWSB) - Businesses across the Suncoast rely on snowbirds and tourists to keep our area growing and thriving. But, a new retirement trend could drastically hurt our economy.
It's called the halfback phenomenon, retirees from up north, move to Florida, then decide to move halfway back up north to places like the Carolina's and Tennessee.
“The people we call the halfbacks. The people who come to Florida then decide to leave and go to, not all the way from where they came from,” said Realtor Dan Heschmeyer.
According to the Wall Street Journal, census data shows that from 2010 to 2017, migration to Appalachian states, increased 169 percent. That's the same percentage of growth for retirement destinations in Florida.
