Broken elevator forces disabled residents to use the stairs

  • 0

NORTH PORT, FL (WWSB) - A group of elderly tenants at a North Port senior living community say they are suffering because of a broken elevator that hasn't been operational for days.

The residents, some of whom have disabilities and health issues, say it takes them 10-15 minutes to go up or down the stairs. A group of them have gone as far as to put together a resident satisfaction survey, asking questions such as: "Do you have any unaddressed safety concerns or maintenance issues?"

"I cannot carry bags up those stairs. I can hardly carry myself up the stairs. I just can't breathe," said one resident.

Another added, "The onsite office management is saying if they need to get outside, they need to call 911. So basically these people are trapped."

A North Port fire marshall tells ABC7 Sarasota that recent lightning strikes to the buildings have affected the elevators and those elevators are non-emergency use only.

ABC7 Sarasota left a message with Good Harbor Management, LLC, the company who owns the property, but did not receive a response.
