Bankruptcy filings by businesses and consumers in Southwest Florida have dropped by nearly 50% from the recession-era peak a few years ago.
About 2,600 residents and companies in Sarasota, Manatee, and Charlotte counties south protection from creditors last year—almost half of the bankruptcies filed in 2010.
However, that is still 500 more bankruptcies than in 2007 just before the economic downturn.
In the Southwest Florida region, bankruptcy filings more than doubled from 2007 to 2010, peaking at 4,991 cases.
Last year, 2,595 bankruptcy petitions were submitted from the three counties—down 48% from that 2010 high, and 16 percent fewer than in 2012.
