Emily took home two individual 1st place medals and 2 more as part of relay teams at the Tarpon Invitational last weekend to help the Mustangs to a 2nd place overall finish. I caught up with her at Sarasota Sharks swim practice, and her coach there had high praise.
"Emily has real, physical gifts," explained Brent Arckey, the Sharks head coach. "She has size, good underwaters, and really good strokes. We are just trying to teach her efficiency."
She was pretty efficient in charlotte considering she went from Sharks swim practice to the Tarpon Invite.
"I was pretty exhausted from the practice in the morning," says Emily Loefgren, the ABC7 Athlete of the Week. "I had that practice, but I was really excited about the meet."
One of the wins she grabbed was in the 200-meter individual medley. Because of its diversity, the IM is her favorite event.
"I like it because it has all the strokes," Loefgren says with a smile. "I practice all of them individually, and then put them all together."
Whether its the 200 IM or another length and stroke, Loefgren has set her sights on the 2020 Olympic Trials because she has seen others from the Sharks go this past spring.
"Loefgren adds, "I saw friends go, and it definitely brings it closer to home. It helps you realize that it is possible."
"The future is obviously there, and all you have to do is be consistent and keep working hard", says Arckey with a degree of finality.
