SARASOTA, FLA. - Salvation Army volunteers spent Saturday sorting donated gifts for Suncoast area children and senior adults in the Angel Tree Program.

“The Angel Tree program takes families in October and sees their needs and asks the children for their wish list,” explained Major Ethan Frizzell.

Frizzell is the Salvation Army area commander for North Sarasota County. He tells ABC 7 they are trying to provide Christmas gifts for 2200 children and several hundred seniors.

“The great thing about Christmas is the whole community comes together to share the joy of the season with others.”

Frizzell is very thankful for the generosity of the community but he says Salvation Army’s deadline to have toys returned is at close of business Monday night and they are short.

“What we see is we are about 500 to 700 toys short to finish packing.”

He hopes the community will step up in the last hour and help them fill their need.

“Whenever the Salvation Army gives we are just giving out of the kindness of the community. If it wasn’t for the kindness of the community there’s a lot of people who wouldn’t have Christmas.”

Frizzell says one of their biggest needs is for toys for both boys and girls ages 10 through 14. Toys can be dropped off December 14 and 15 at the Walmart store Cattleman Road. Donations can also be dropped off at any Salvation Army locations on 10th Ave and South Tuttle Ave. or on Monday in the lobby of ABC 7 until 5pm.
