VENICE, FL - A big event this weekend in Venice as hundreds of professional and amature athletes compete in the Rev-3 triathlon.

Friday crews setting up near the Venice Fishing Pier. More than 600 will take part in the event which includes swimming, running, and a 56-mile bike course.

Just as many volunteers are taking part. Able to raise money for a few dozen local charities.

Tourism officials say last years event put more than $400,000 into the local economy. They expect the same this year as athletes and those they bring fill hotels and restaurants. "There are a lot of people coming. Typically people come from about 40 different states. Six or seven different countries. They come from all over the world and all over the country," says Organizer with Rev-3 Eric Opdyke.

Venice Mayor John Holic says it's an economic driver for the area and shows the city off. "It's great exposure for the city. People that live here, people visiting, and the athletes to be exposed to the city and see what we have to offer."

The public is invited to events at Maxine Barritt Park in Venice tonight and throughout tomorrow. The race starts Sunday morning at 7am.

Some streets in the Venice and Nokomis areas will be closed at times so be aware while driving around on Sunday.
