Lt. Pat Ledwith, Sarasota Police Department, addresses media regarding Southgate incident

SARASOTA, Fla. -- October 16, 2013 -- 2:30 p.m.

Detectives with the Sarasota Police Department have deemed Tuesday's incident at the Westfield Southgate Shopping Center not hazardous. Detectives were able to identify the subject involved in this incident and at this time they are not facing charges.

An investigation by detectives revealed the subject in this case was mourning the loss of a fiancé. The subject decided to spread the ashes of the deceased fiancé inside the LensCrafters store at approximately 11:20 a.m. Tuesday.

No injuries or medical issues were reported as a result of the incident and the investigation determined there was no malicious intent by the subject. When questioned about the incident by officers, the subject was apologetic and did not intend to cause harm. The Sarasota Police Department is offering the subject grieving counseling services in reference to this event.

Sarasota Police Chief Bernadette DiPino added, "There are protocols that law enforcement must follow for Homeland Security and it was the response by law enforcement and emergency personnel to show that the matter was not dangerous. We are relieved in this case that the substance was not harmful. Hindsight is always 20/20 but in these types of situations our response was necessary and appropriate."
