SARASOTA CO., Fla (WWSB) -- A Suncoast's family's quality of life took a sharp turn over the past couple years.
A year after Kristina Brightbill gave birth to a special needs son, she suffered a rare stroke called "locked-in syndrome" that has left her unable to care for herself and unable to communicate beyond blinking her eyes.
Her parents, Jim and Linda Daly, are trying to make ends meet--but even the cost of part-time caregivers is over a thousand dollars a week. They're hoping to build an addition on their house since Christina's wheelchair can't fit through the door frames and they have to take it apart to move her around the house. Jim was a mechanic for the fire department.
"We're still trying to cope with the fact this happened to Kristina. It literally happened within five seconds, we were packing to come home to her brother's wedding. Lucas was more stable," Linda said.
