SIESTA KEY, FL (WWSB) - Some people are still evacuated from their homes due to Hurricane Irma and are now relying on FEMA to foot the bill for hotel stays.
Only three hotels in Manatee and Sarasota counties are participating in the program, and with thousands of people still displaced from the storm, the rush is on to snag one of the open rooms.
Capri at Siesta, a small boutique hotel only with only 10 rooms, tells ABC7 they worked to accommodate storm victims with FEMA vouchers the best they could around scheduled reservations.
The other hotels are experiencing the same thing. Homewood Suites in Sarasota is also sold out as of Thursday, and Anna Maria Island Inn has been overwhelmed by calls, more than 300 per hour according to their post-Irma custom voicemail.
