Opioid addiction continues to skyrocket. It's a problem that has greatly affected the Suncoast.
493 percent…that’s how much of an increase there has been from 2010 to 2016 in the number of Americans diagnosed with addiction to opioids, according to an analysis by Blue Cross Blue Shield.
Yet during that same time period there was only a 65% increase in the number of people getting medication-assisted treatment to manage their addiction.
The BCBS analysis also found that longer-duration prescriptions were associated with higher incidences of opioid use disorder.
The insurance company is working on initiatives to prevent and treat opioid addiction, and the Trump administration has also made that a top priority.
