BRADENTON, FL (WWSB) - "Project Smart Smiles," a student-led clinic, provided free dental care for over 40 underserved children Friday.
Manatee Technical College dental assisting students worked side by side with volunteer dentists and hygienists from all across the Suncoast, to provide dental services to those who would otherwise not have access to proper care.
According to the Center for Disease Control, tooth decay is one of the most common chronic conditions children face in the United States. Untreated tooth decay can cause pain and infections that may lead to problems with eating, speaking and learning.
Run by MTC students and alumni volunteers, the clinic is open two to four times per year depending on funding and volunteer dentist availability.
