When it comes to sweentners, should you use the real of the fake stuff?

If you are of a certain age, you may remember your mother tipping little white pills into her coffee. Saccharin was the choice of sweetness for the women of the sixties and seventies. This product was studies and was thought to contribute to bladder cancer in laboratory rodents, but there was never a conclusive study performed.

Now the more familiar brands of artificial sweetener include Equal, Splenda and NutraSweet, which is in more than 5,000 foods and beverages worldwide. But could these be harmful to your health?

Eve Plews of Full Spectrum health said, "Aspartame is what I consider to be one of the most dangerous chemicals out there on the market." Plews said that Aspartame has been linked to seizures in those vulnerable to strobe light triggered seizures, and that the FDA has seventy four thousand written complaints about Aspartame.

She cautions that studies including "the San Antonio Study" find that people that consume diet soda are particularly prone to obesity.

When you see bottle of what's considered the real thing, is it really the real thing?

Not so fast said Dr. Fred Harvey of the Harvey Center for Integrative Medicine, "High fructose corn syrup is a modified sweetener." and although many think that this is a completely natural substance, they are misled.

He suggests using products that contain natural sweeteners like agave.

The bottom line is that you have to read the labels and if you don't understand what the word is, then you may want to ditch the fake adn the not so real for the H2O.
