Only 12 percent of uninsured mothers attend breastfeeding support classes, according to a new survey from the University of Michigan.

In a survey of 452 parents of children aged 0 to three, about 40 percent of first-time parents said they had attended a class. But the poll also showed only 12 percent of uninsured mothers were attending the class, while 28 percent of mothers on private insurance and 29 percent of mothers on public insurance were attending. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends babies be breastfed exclusively for the first six months, and then in conjunction with other foods until 12 months.

“Babies who breastfeed have lower rates of infection, obesity and diabetes. Mothers who breastfeed have lower rates of postpartum depression, type 2 diabetes and some types of cancer,” researcher Michelle Moniz, MD, and researcher at the University of Michigan Medical School, was quoted as saying. “We want all families to be able to take advantage of those benefits, not just those who have consistent insurance coverage, so we need to make providing affordable classes and other breastfeeding support a priority.”
